Cheryl Chapman

ARTIST STATEMENT
Chapman’s paintings reflect a worldview that recognizes the human desire to arrange, distill, and make sense of an infinitely complex and interrelated universe. What can be perceived is only an incomplete generalization of a vast and dense network of information. Seeking the essence of things in this often-overwhelming age of information, we assemble emerging bits and hints into patterns to better enable understanding. As a painter of non-objective and abstracted form, Chapman sees her process of artmaking as allowing a visual vocabulary to express, with color and composition, some of these ideas for which words are inadequate. The visual occurrence of everyday life, where color, line, and form find just the right intersection to create moments of curiosity, wonder, and beauty, is where Chapman’s inspiration blossoms.
